Athlone councillor critical of ESB as flood fears grow

An Athlone Councillor claims the ESB should have released more water through Parteen weir to avoid the current high water level of the River Shannon in the town.

The Minister for the OPW Kevin Boxer Moran revealed last night that rising water levels were being closely monitored by his Department at various points along the River Shannon.

The Longford-Westmeath TD claimed that due to recent heavy rainfall, the water level in Athlone town centre was now six inches higher than this day last week, and at Clonowen, it was now 11 inches higher.

The Minister also confirmed that at present, 600 cubic metres of water is now being released at the Parteen weir in order to try and reduce the water levels.
