Athlone town will need significant upgrades to its rail infrastructure for its future growth.
That’s according to Chamber of Commerce president John McGrath, who is welcoming the news the town is to be granted regional capital status under the National Planning Framework.
The framework will be announced in Sligo this Friday, and it’s widely reported the midlands town will be designated as an area for significant development over the next 20 years.
McGrath says he’s delighted it appears their campaigning has been successful, and he says certain measures will need to be taken to make sure the area develops to its full potential.
McGrath says a report commissioned by Iarnród Eireann in 2011 identified the need to upgrade the rail network at Athlone in order to improve the Dublin-Galway commute times.
