Athlone Chamber of Commerce is hopeful that any works on Church Street in the town will be complete before the major Christmas shopping season begins.
It was confirmed today that the one-way system, which will see traffic move from east to west only, will begin on Thursday February 15th.
The enhancement works, costing an estimated €3million euro, will see the street narrowed to allow for just single vehicles to pass through, and will also create wider footpaths, a plaza, as well as bike stands and street furniture.
Contractors John Craddock, who are from Kildare, will begin work immediately on the street once it is one-way, which it’s hoped will be completed by November – although no firm date was confirmed by the council.
John McGrath, president of Athlone Chamber, told Shannonside FM that not everyone will be happy, but something had to change in the town:
