Athlone-based air ambulance passes historic milestone

A piece of history was made in Longford this morning as the 2,001st medical emergency responded to by the Rescue 112 air ambulance took place in Longford.

The helicopter, based at Custume Barracks in Athlone, was on its way back to base from another callout when it was dispatched after a call for assistance in the Longford area.

It arrived at the scene shortly before noon and following some medical intervention, it was decided not to airlift the patient.

The operation was one of three the Air Corps engaged in today, pushing them just above 2,000 operations undertaken by the ambulance helicopter since it was established at Custume Barracks in June 2012.
