On September 4th, the council was alerted to a bed and mattress that was dumped in Ballaghaderreen and ten days later, it received two similar complaints, involving an abandoned washing-machine in Castlerea and a suite of furniture in Roscommon.

On September 29th, a resident reported a sofa was dumped in a layby near Athlone.

The vast majority of the environmental reports received by the local authority last month related to household waste, such as a large amount of rubbish at a vacant property in Castlerea.

It was also claimed dumping was rife at recycling banks at Curraghboy and Ballinaheglish.

The council was also told there was an illegal scrapyard in operation in Ballaghaderreen and rats in an estate near Roscommon town.

It was also reported that effluent was flowing from a Castlerea farmyard on to a road.
