Roscommon review doesn’t recognise psychiatric nurses’ bravery – expert

A Roscommon mental-health expert claims the recent review of services in the county doesn’t recognise the bravery of community psychiatric nurses in dealing with patients armed with a gun, knife or can of petrol.

Earlier this month, the HSE published a damning review of mental health services in Roscommon.

However, Dr Hugh O’Donnell, a GP in Strokestown and former employee of Roscommon’s psychiatric unit, claims the report is very lacking in specifics about alleged misbehaviour.

The report also notes that nearly €18 million in funding was returned unspent to the HSE from Roscommon mental health services in a three-year period.

Dr O’Donnell calls for that to be returned immediately.

However, he believes the ‘bravery’ of some staff in dealing with suicidal patients isn’t acknowledged in the review.
