Roscommon proves the doubters wrong as Yes vote dominates by 57% to 42%

And it’s a yes from the voters of Roscommon-Galway.

Casting aside the no vote in the marriage equality referendum, this generally conservative constituency has returned a yes vote of 57.2% with a 42.7% of the valid poll voting number.

In figures the total electorate is 63,100, the total valid no of votes cast was 41,386 – 23,677 voted to repeal the 8th amendment with 17,709 voters casting a no vote.

With a tally done on just 109 of the 132 boxes, it’s hard to know the exact way each area voted but tally people here analysed that the yes margin was more pronounced in more urban areas – one box in Bealnmulla where the result was overwhelmingly yes, 249 to 99 but in other places it was closer, Rooskey 83 nos and 82 yeses, one box in the Quad in Roscommon town tied on 96 votes for each side.

Sporadic boxes across the region returned a no vote, bearing in mind over 20 boxes were not tallied, these included individual boxes in Mountbellew, Castlerea, Granlahan, Castlefrench, Ballaghadereen and generally it was 10/20/30/40 votes between the two sides in most areas.

Both the yes and no sides worked together today, the no side expressing their disappointment at the result and for those who had campaigned for a yes vote, not so much jubilance, but relief.
