Roscommon GP claims online bullying factor in teen suicide

A Roscommon GP says bullying on social media is a big factor in the high rate of suicide among young people in Ireland.

Dr Greg Kelly, an activist on mental heath issues said cyberbullying can cause a lot of stress and lead to depression in teens.

He said however that the provision of services for young people especially in the 16 to 18 year age group were the worst in psychiatry in this country and it’s almost impossible to access in-patient beds.

The Castlerea GP was speaking on today’s Lets Talk Show as alarming new figures from UNICEF reveal that Ireland has the fourth highest teen suicide rate of EU/OECD countries.

Dr Kelly says that with cyber bullying there is no escape for young people.
