The well-known Royal Hotel in Boyle has been bought by Roscommon County Council.
The building, which was built more than 200 years ago, has fallen into very poor condition after closing about five years ago.
It has been on the property market for the past two years, initially priced at €250,000, on the instructions of Grant Thornton.
However, in April of last year, it was due to be sold at an Allsop auction with a reserve of €90,000 to €100,000, but was withdrawn after a legal challenge.
However, on Friday evening, Mike Smith, of PropertyTeam Smith Kelly Scott in Boyle, confirmed to Shannonside FM the property had been sold to the council.
The sale closed on Friday afternoon and, although the price hasn’t been revealed publicly, Shannonside FM understands it was bought for €100,000.
It’s not yet known what is the local authority’s intention for the building, which is 20,000-square-feet in size.
It is not listed as a protected structure, so demolishing it could be an option.
Bodo Funke, the president of Boyle Chamber of Commerce, is cautiously welcoming the sale.
Sinn Féin councillor Michael Mulligan, who represents the Boyle Municipal District, is also delighted with the sale and has this advice to the council.
