Roscommon CFO claims some bog fires may not be accidental

Roscommon Chief Fire Officer John Kane says the fires on Kilronan mountain near Arigna in recent days are very suspicious.

Bog fires which broke out last Friday morning on several different areas of the mountain took several hours to bring under control.

John Kane says they were happy to have managed to stop the blaze spreading into a huge area of forestry on the Roscommon Leitrim border, but they believe the fires may well have beEN started deliberately.

Speaking on Let’s Talk this afternoon the Chief Fire Officer says the pattern of the fires doesn’t suggest an accidental blaze…

John Kane also revealed that the cost of fighting fires across the county over the past weekend alone is in the region of €100,000 euro.

He says this will have a significant impact on the fires services budget for the rest of the year:

Fire crews in Roscommon are also battling two gorse fires this evening.

Units from Roscommon town and Ballaghaderreen are tackling a fire on the Ballymoe road out of Castlerea at present where a fire in a small plantation of forestry has taken hold.

Separately fire crews from Boyle are in action against a fire on the Castlerea road out of Frenchpark.
