REVEALED: Roscommon health centres to close under HSE plan

New HSE documents reveal some health centres in Roscommon could be set to close this year.

The services offered in these facilities are likely to be moved into primary care centres, such as the one under construction in Boyle.

A 17,000-square-foot primary care centre is set to open in Boyle in September, and it will offer GP, dental and other services.

According to new HSE documents, released to Shannonside FM, health centres in its vicinity could be closed and moved into it.

The minutes of the January meeting of the primary care regional management team for Galway, Mayo and Roscommon say that ‘urgent work is required to ensure the closure of small centres within a specified radius of newly located primary care centres’.

The health centres near Boyle include ones in Ballaghaderreen, Elphin and Strokestown.

Primary care centres also opened in 2012 in Castlerea, Monksland and Roscommon town, with several smaller health facilities throughout the county.

The HSE confirms to Shannonside FM that, as part of the development of primary care centres, services being provided in existing health centres will be reviewed.

It adds this will be in context of whether these services would be more appropriately delivered from a primary care centre.

It claims after the review, a decision with regard to the future of existing health centres will be made.
