Rates increase puts Roscommon visitor farm under threat

A north Roscommon farmer claims his and many other businesses could be forced to close because of huge increases in commercial rates.

A revaluation of rates is currently being conducted and, on Friday, traders in Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon received their new liabilities.

However, it’s claimed some are facing huge increases.

Matt O’Dowd has run a visitor farm, called Tullyboy Farm, at Croghan, near Boyle, for 24 years.

A family business, it employs up to 15 people at peak times and has about 25,000 visitors a year.

But he says it faces closure after his rates more than doubled, from €1,100 to about €2,600.
