Pike threatening future of native brown trout

Anglers and fishermen from the Shannonside region are being invited to a meeting tonight to discuss what is being described a a huge threat to one of Ireland’s most popular native species of fish.

The Connacht Angling Council is raising fears that stock of the native brown trout is under threat due to the growth of predator pike.

It’s been claimed that unless the government steps in to carry out a controlled cull of pike, or Inland Fisheries Ireland takes action, stocks of brown trout will be wiped out in the west of Ireland.
