Ballaghaderreen cathedral is to close its’ doors for more than six months to allow for a €1.4m revamp.
The contract for the refurbishment has been awarded to Kilcawley Construction from Sligo and was signed in recent days.
Work is due to begin on Monday 9th October and according to Parish Priest Fr Joseph Gavigan it’s expected to take up to the middle of April next.
In the intervening months mass goers will be facilitated in the Oratory of nearby St Nathy’s College.
The renovation of the building will be both internal and external with work to be done on the lighting, heating and ventilation systems, the stain glass windows, pointing of the walls and repairs to the roof.
Fr Gavigan explained that the facelift is very welcome and has been in the pipeline for several years now.
