New chair of Western Development Commission wants more targeted projects for region

The new chairperson of the Western Development Commission says she hopes the body can work in a more targeted way for the future to promote the west of Ireland.

The commission was established in 1998 to promote economic and social development in the region which includes Roscommon and Leitrim.

A new board was appointed to the commission in August of this year and Dr Deirdre Garvey who chaired its first meeting says a lot of the problems of 20 years ago remain the same in terms of providing jobs and opportunities to encourage people to stay and live in the region.


She says the wealth of the region lies in its people, and the commission will be working closely with other agencies to promote their future over the coming months…
