The ‘Save Roscommon’ group is calling for cross-party support today for a Dáil Bill that would mean the people would have to vote to change a county’s boundary.
The legislation, being introduced by Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy, would mean the Local Government Minister Simon Coveney would have to hold a plebiscite on any proposal for a redrawing of a county boundary.
A similar Bill was introduced by Denis Naughten before he became Minister for the Environment, but he hasn’t yet indicated if he’ll support it.
Deputy Murphy’s legislation, called the Local Government Amendment Bill 2017, is backed by Save Roscommon, which was formed to protest against south Roscommon being moved into Westmeath.
This afternoon, the Bill will be introduced in the Dáil and a contingent from Save Roscommon will be present in the gallery.
Their chairman is Tony Ward.
