Minister for mental health to meet HSE staff in Roscommon next week

The Minister of State with responsibility for mental health has said he will be meeting with Chief Medical Officer Tony Canavan next Monday to discuss the findings of the review of mental health services in Co Roscommon.

The review was published earlier this month after a long delay and it severely criticised the services provided in the county, and the emphasis on cost saving as opposed to patient care.

The report was raised under Topical Issues in the Dail this afternoon by Sinn Fein and FF.

Deputies Martin Kenny of Sinn Fein and Eugene Murphy of Fianna Fail both expressed their concerns at the findings of the report and also mentioned an instance of a young woman who has died in the services in the county in recent years.

Deputy Kenny said he believes there has to be a complete culture change in the service in Roscommon.

Deputy Eugene Murphy says he believes there was a complete systems failure in the case of the young woman whose family now have to cope without her.

Replying to the concerns raised this afternoon, Minister of State Daly says he will be meeting with HSE staff on Monday and will be closely monitoring the carrying out of the reports recommendations.
