Local hospital group’s agency costs spiral to €30m

The Saolta University Healthcare Group has spent more than €30 million on employing agency staff this year.

According to the minutes of the June meeting of the group’s executive council, released to Shannonside FM, the costs have doubled in the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period last year.

After lengthy discussed at the meeting, it was agreed director of human resources John Shaughnessy would establish a sub-group to discuss agency utilisation.

The Saolta group comprises seven hospitals in the west and northwest, including Roscommon, Sligo and Portiuncula.

Roscommon-Galway TD Eugene Murphy, a member of Fianna Fáil, is calling on the government to address the overuse of agency staff across the group.
