Cyclists take risks at level crossing in Athlone

A spokesperson for Irish Rail is appealing to motorists to take heed of the flashing lights and signage at rail crossings around the country.

It’s after a report yesterday on a near miss incident between a train and a car at Knockroghery level crossing in Co Roscommon in January of this year.

Barry Kenny said these incidents happen when drivers do not take heed of warning signals at the crossing, and all road users need to be more careful when approaching them.

He says they’ve studied cases at level crossing in Athlone and other areas where cyclists have tried to push past the barriers to cross a track.
