A local couple were rescued from a sinking cruiser on Lough Ree after a three-hour search during the night.
At about 1.10 this morning, two people on board on 40-foot steel cruiser called emergency services to say their boat had run aground and was taking in water.
The described their location as the Longford shore of the lake, but after several hours of searching by Lough Ree RNLI, there was no trace of them.
An Irish Coast Guard’s Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo was called to assist and they were eventually near Rindoon on the other side of the lake, which was treacherous and rocky.
Lough Ree RNLI successfully hauled the couple off the boat and neither of them was injured.
