BREAKING: €10-million Boyle distillery plans granted permission

There’s a major boost for Boyle today with planning permission granted for a new whiskey distillery and visitor centre to be developed in the town.

One of the owners of the disused Boyle Mill, where the project would be based, reveals it could create up to 20 jobs.

Initially, it would require an investment of €5 million and €10 million in the long term.

Boyle Mill, a protected structure built more than 200 years ago, is a four and five-storey building that closed as a feed plant about two years ago.

It’s been owned by the Stewart family for 140 years and, in April, Neil Stewart, a proprietor of Joseph Stewart & Co, lodged a planning application for a whiskey distillery and visitor centre in the mill and the adjoining 26 acres.

The plant would also generate electricity.

Neil says it would require a partner from the drinks business to invest in it.

The planning process was delayed because Roscommon County Council wanted significant further information, but permission has now been granted, subject to 18 conditions.
