Bog owners who have rights to cut turf in special areas of conservation in Longford and Roscommon are set to take part in a new pilot scheme aimed at reducing their dependency on solid fuels.
Environment Minister Denis Naughten confirmed on Saturday that people who owned plots at six SAC’s across the Shannonside region and further west will be part of the scheme getting underway early next year.
Ardgullion Bog in Longford and Baile na Mona in south Roscommon will be among the areas included in the pilot which is being co-ordinated by Moate based Irish Rural Link.
Homeowners in those areas will be able to avail of special grants of up to €30,000 euro to investigate methods of becoming more energy efficient.
Denis Naughten hopes it will be major success and may also lead to the scheme being extended nationwide
