Homeowners and businesses in the Shannonside region are being urged to ensure that they only use registered and fully licensed security companies.
The Private Security Authority, the regulator, says its officers have carried out over 300 inspections of businesses in county Longford alone last year.
They cover not just alarm installers, but also doormen, security guards, cash in transit operations, locksmiths and private investigators.
One firm was brought to court last week and fined 250 euro for not having a current license.
