The national Famine Walk will be sent off by President Michael D Higgins from Clondra in Co Longford this morning.
The event recreates the journey of almost 1500 tenants from Denis Mahon’s estate at Strokestown Park house in Roscommon in May of 1847.
The tenants were escorted by a bailiff to Dublin to make sure they boarded ships and did not try to come back home.
Local people will be joined by walkers from the United States, Canada, Northern Ireland and Finland as they may their way along the Royal Canal for the next six days.
Caoirilin Callery of Strokestown Park says plans are in place to market a National Famine Way along the route which takes in Longford, Westmeath, Meath and Dublin over the next few years…
