“Due to the Red Weather Alert issued for the entire country St Christopher’s Day Services in County Longford will close on Monday 16th October 2017.


Mohill Bingo for tonight October 16th is Cancelled due to the Status Weather Red Alert.

Coolkeen Adventures Hazelwood Shopping Centre closed today.

Harmac in Castlerea is also closed today.

Bank of Ireland has advised that all its’ branches in Counties Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim will remain closed today.

Longford credit union is closed today in the interest of safety.

There’s no Novena this evening in The church of the Risen Christ Ballybay  Kiltoom owing to the storm.

The programme, “understanding and mining your mental health” tonight in the family resource centre in longford has been cancelled until next Monday night 23rd.

Supervalue in Longford are closing today at 11.30 today, and reopening tomorrow morning at 8.30 am.

Due to the severe weather due to hit their trading region in the afternoon all Homeland stores are to close at 12 noon today.

There will be no delivery of meals-on-wheels today in County Longford. Services are expected to resume as normal tomorrow.

Around 100-thousand homes are now without power as Storm Ophelia batters the country.

Winds of just over 190 kilometers per hour have struck off the coast of Cork this morning.

The National Emergency Coordination Group has been meeting – with emergency services, Met Eireann, transport bodies and Government Departments discussing how to respond.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says the whole country should be on high alert.

Family doctors are asking the public to only contact them in an emergency.

The HSE says only urgent procedures will take place today and only essential community services will operate.

Irish Rail is stopping its services on ALL routes at two o’clock.

Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and the Luas have all suspended their services as the storm takes hold.

People are also being asked not to drive unless they have to.

All NCT Centres are closed on Monday 16 October due to Hurricane Ophelia. They will reopen as normal on Tuesday 17 October 2017.

Irish Water: Storm Ophelia update
Irish Water has incident plans in place and crews on standby to deal with the effects of Storm Ophelia. Irish Water recognises that the predicted conditions are likely to result in power outages at critical water and wastewater installations which could compromise service delivery. Heavy rainfall may also increase the risk of flooding.

Lock Closure

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners of vessels that as a result of Storm Ophelia all locks will remain closed today 16 October 2017.

170,000 people are without power as storm Ophelia batters the country.

The majority of power outages are in the south of the country.

Many of the homes and business affected will be without power until tomorrow.

The ESB says people need to make a contingency plan.

One person has died as a result of storm Ophelia.

Hurricane wind speeds of 190 kilometres an hour have been recorded at Fastnet rock off the south Cork coast.

Schools, universities, small businesses, and some health centres are shut, with many employees being urged to stay at home.

Public transport is being wound down and up to 130 flights have been cancelled – while we’re asked to avoid all non-essential
travel.

Gardaí are advising people not to make any unnecessary journeys as the storm continues to batter the country.

Irish Rail, Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and the Luas have all suspended their services.

As the storm grips the country, people are being urged not to drive unless they have to.

Just before 12 this morning a tree fell on a car on the Aglish to Clashmore Road in Co Waterford.

At least two people are understood to be inside.Across the country, fallen trees have severely affected road conditions.

The country’s public transport system has also been severely hampered by the storm.

Irish Rail is suspending all its trains from 2 o’clock until further notice.

Bus Eireann has suspended its buses until 2 this afternoon and says it’ll review the situation then.

While Dublin Bus has withdrawn its services until at least 7pm tonight

The Luas has also cancelled all its trams until tomorrow morning.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and passengers are being asked to get in touch with their airlines.

While all Dublin to Holyhead sailings have been cancelled.

Meanwhile the Irish Coastguard is urging people to stay away from the coast, beaches and cliffs and for nobody to attempt to surf.

It’s after two kitesurfers had to be rescued off the coast of Blackrock in Louth this morning.

The Clogherhead life boat and a rescue helicopter were deployed to bring them into safety after they got into difficulty this morning.

BREAKING: 13:20

Gardaí are at scene of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred outside Aglish village on the R671 this morning at 11.40 a.m.

A female driver reportedly in her mid 20s was fatally injured when the car she was driver was struck by a falling tree.  A female passenger in mid 50s was injured and has been removed to Waterford Regional Hospital with non life threatening injuries.  Emergencies services are still at scene.

Gardaí urge all road users to remain indoors and not to travel unless your journey is absolutely necessary.  Weather conditions in West Waterford and Waterford city are currently described as severe and reports of numerous falling trees due to high winds.

There is a tree down in Killashee in Longford, just at the bad bend in the village.

Longford County Council has been informed.

There is a tree down on the L1163 near the Bord na Mona factory in Longford.

In Roscommon –

There are two roads completely blocked- there is a tree down at the Cooncuddy Bridge and  there is also a tree down now at Raskins Pub.

The Roscommon-Athleague road is now down to one lane due to a fallen tree.

Gardaí are at scene of a fatal incident that occurred at Ballybrado, Cahir, Co. Tipperary at approximately 12.30p.m. today, Monday 16th October, 2017.

A man (early 30s) while in the course of clearing a fallen tree was seriously injured with a chain saw. He has since passed away and his body has been removed to Clonmel Hospital.

Gardaí continue to advise all persons to stay indoors and not to venture out. Do not put your life or the lives of the Emergency Services at risk by travelling unless absolutely necessary.

The N55 Granard to Edgeworthstown is down to one lane due to fallen tree.  Please note Lorries will not be able to get through at this location.  Road closed to HGV’s.
