An objection has been lodged against the extensive refurbishment work planned for Pearse Park in Longford on health and safety grounds.

A resident also claims the construction project would cause noise pollution and disruption to residents.

In August, Longford County Council lodged a planning application for the upgrade of Pearse Park.

In a project that’ll cost several hundred thousand euros, parts of the terraces and stand would be demolished and rebuilt, with additional seating, along with other works.

The deadline for submissions has now passed and two objections have been lodged.

In her objection, Mairead Lee says she lives at 96 Cartrun Breac, which she claims is only 50 metres to the rear of the west stand, where the majority of the work is planned.

She opposes the development on the grounds of noise pollution during construction, which she also claims would disrupt, obstruct and inconvenience residents.

Ms Lee believes the works would carry a health and safety risk and create traffic-management problems.

A representation has also been made by Independent councillor Gerry Warnock, who supports the works but wants them done in a way that’ll cause minimal disturbance to residents.

The council is due to make a decision on the application in two weeks’ time.
