Longford GP: Hiring more staff will solve overcrowding crisis

Longford GP Padraig McGarry says he believes the overcrowding situation at our hospitals will not be significantly improved until more doctors and nurses are hired.

He was speaking today as the numbers of people waiting on trolleys around the country continue to cause major concern for the health and safety of patients and staff.

Health Minister Simon Harris announced an extra €5 million funding to tackle the crisis yesterday and said these funds will be used to cover the cost of homecare packages, home-help hours and transitional care beds.

But Dr McGarry says the low staff numbers in the hospitals is the most fundamental cause of our present difficulties.
