A local councillor is claiming several Longford businesses could be set to face a 50 per cent increase in their commercial rates next year.
The Valuation Office is revaluing rates countrywide, with companies in Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon among those being assessed at present.
Granard Municipal District councillor Micheál Carrigy says he received his proposed new rate for his Ballinalee shop and post office this morning.

He says it would result in his payment rising by a third in 2018, with several others in the area facing similar increases.
He is calling for people to make representations to the Valuation Office within 40 days of receiving their proposed new rate and ask for it to be changed.
