The Ireland East group has confirmed it will continue to look for a locum Community Ophthalmic physician to cover eye-care services in Longford while a senior staff member is on maternity leave.
Concern has been raised that the service, based on the grounds of St Joseph’s Hospital, could be lost to Mullingar or Athlone for the duration of the maternity leave which began earlier this month.
In a statement to Shannonside FM, The Regional Hospital Mullingar claims every effort has been made to appoint a locum Community Ophthalmic physician to cover maternity leave and will continue efforts to source a locum.
It goes on to say that until the vacanay is filled, all options are being considered to ensure urgent patients from Longford are accommodated within the Longford/Westmeath Region.’
