Connie Gerety Quinn has announced today she won’t be contesting a convention to decide who takes the Longford council seat vacated by Padraig Loughrey.
The former Fianna Fáil general-election candidate had been nominated alongside Joe Flaherty, who is the current general election candidate, to take the local authority seat.
Gerety Quinn had indicated last week that she was considering contesting convention but today she says that she has decided not to.
She says that having considered all implications, she feels it would be fair not to be in a position to fully commit to representing the people in the county.
The Citizens Information centre manager says she is stepping back now, but will keep her options open for the future.
