Longford gardaí are urging owners of vacant property to ensure they are properly secured after a string of copper thefts from homes in the past number of weeks.
Superintendent Brian Mohan confirmed at this week’s joint policing committee meeting that a person is due before Longford District Court today after an operation targeting copper-cylinder thefts since the start of 2018.
The meeting heard there has been an increase in burglaries in the Longford and Granard Garda districts since the beginning of this year, and that a premises was searched recently where eight copper cylinders were discovered.
Superintendent Jim Delaney told the meeting that there is a 30-per-cent increase in the number of burglaries detected so far this year compared to 2017.
He’s appealing to property owners to do everything possible to make it difficult for thieves to attack their homes and property.
