Dozens of groups working with older people across the Shannonside region have been awarded grants to boost their activities.
More than 80 local organisations from men’s sheds to sports clubs, active retirement groups and ICA guilds will benefit from the funding.
Thirty-two groups in Leitrim are to receive a total of €8,690; in Longford, 27 groups are set to benefit to the tune of €7,810; in Roscommon, 23 organisations will receive €6,810.
Announcing the Go for Life Grants, Junior Sports Minister Brendan Griffin said over the past 17 years the scheme has empowered thousands of groups of older people to get more active more often.
The Age and Opportunity and Sport Ireland initiative gives relatively small grants to groups, but Go for Life programme manager Mary Harkin says they make a lot of difference.
