It’s been revealed it could be six years before construction begins on the proposed upgrade of the N55.
A public consultation will take place in Tubberclair Community Centre, near Athlone, tomorrow between 2pm and 8pm.
Previously, similar events took place about the realignment of the N55 between Ballymahon and the Pigeons and five potential routes were identified.
But these plans were scrapped in favour of taking in the N55 national secondary route between Athlone and Ballymahon.
The public will have an opportunity tomorrow to voice their views on the 18-kilometre project, likely cost about €50 million, before a preferred route is chosen.
But Anne-Marie Corroon, a project engineer with Westmeath’s national roads office, accepts construction work is unlikely to take place for a number of years.
