Five Shannonside TDs to accept salary hike up to €90,000

The majority of TDs in the Shannonside region are foregoing a pay hike that would see their annual salary rise to almost €90,000.

Five deputies have indicated they are accepting the controversial €2,700 increase which is the first half of a two-part package with another €2,700 due to be paid to them next January.

The five are Sligo-Leitrim TDs Marc MacSharry and Tony McLoughlin and Longford-Westmeath Deputies Robert Troy and Willie Penrose and Peter Burke.

Deputies Martin Kenny, Kevin Boxer Moran, Denis Naughton, Michael Fitzmaurice and Eugene Murphy are not accepting the increase.

TDs are entitled to the pay rises as part of wage restoration aimed at reinstating cuts applied during the recession.

Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe has already asked ministers to give their increases back to the State voluntarily.

But most political parties are allowing TDs to decide for themselves what to do except for Sinn Fein which has instructed all its’ Dail Deputies to sign waivers to it.

Shannonside was unable to contact Deputy Eamon Scanlon.
