Father of three denies he’s in Longford to exploit welfare system

A father of three who fled England to come to Ireland with his children has denied suggestions that he wants to use the Irish welfare system to get a better life here.

Carl O’Leary has been in Longford since the early November and has been trying unsuccessfully to get accommodation from the council.

He says he had to bring the children to Ireland to stop them being forcibly adopted by the English social welfare system after the relationship with his partner broke down.


He says the children would have been taken into care against his wishes because his name isn’t actually on the birth certificates, and he had no choice but to bring them somewhere where they could at least stay together.
