Edgeworthstown traders slam closure of bank

The head of the traders’ association in Edgeworthstown has described the closure of the Ulster Bank branch in the town as ‘another nail in the coffin’ of rural life.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the bank, which is long established in the town, will close by September, with the loss of several jobs.

Nationally, 22 branches are closing down, with Ulster Bank claiming one of the key reasons for shutting the branches was a lack of footfall.

Traders in the town have expressed their disappointment and anger at the decision that will leave the area with no ATM after 9.30pm at night.

Traders’ association chairman Gerry Lynn told Shannonside FM it’s a terrible blow to the area.
