Councillor warns Choice Based Letting could create ‘another Rathkeale’ in Longford

A Longford county councillor has warned the local authority not to create a ‘Rathkeale’ in the middle of the county under a new a social housing scheme.

This month’s meeting of the local authority heard that six houses, two in each municipal district, will become available next year under a choice based letting scheme which is being piloted by the county council.

The move was backed by several councillors but concerns were expressed by independent representative Mark Casey.

He fears that under the plan, the local authority will be unable to prevent people who they do not wish to move into a particular area from taking up residence in a house.

Councillor Casey told Let’s Talk that the local authority needs to be very careful in it’s approach to the scheme
