According to the latest findings from Census 2016 – more than 2 million people were in the workforce last year – with the majority of these employed in the services sector.
Longford had the highest unemployment rate last year at almost 20 percent while eight of the top 10 so-called blackspots were in Limerick.
The figures also show an increase in the numbers of people commuting to work with a significant jump in those choosing to cycle.
At the time the survey was carried out almost six in every ten people said that they had very good health – while 13.5 percent of the population say they had a disability.
The number of carers has jumped to more than 195 thousand – while the number of hours spent caring has also increased.
