The number of Irish Travellers living in Longford has risen by nearly 40 per cent, according to the latest figures from Census 2016.
According to the CSO statistics, there were 1,049 Travellers residing in the county in April 2016, an increase of 296 on the number in 2011.
More than half of all of these were aged under 20 compared to nearly 30 per cent of the county’s overall population.
In Roscommon the number of Travellers increased by almost 35 per cent during the same period, up to 514 from 381 in 2011.
There was a drop of 20 per cent in the number of Travellers living in Leitrim, from 264 six years ago to 211 last year.
