Almost three-and-a-half-thousand penalty point notices were cancelled in the Shannonside region according to a new report released by GSOC.
The figures were contained in a report into allegations by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe that the system was being abused.
It examined data relating to the issuing of 1.6 million fixed charge notices and over 74 thousand cancellations between 2009 and 2012.
2,098 notices in Roscommon were cancelled between 2009 and 2012, representing three percent off all cancellations issued in the county.
In Leitrim, 688 notices were cancelled, representing just one per cent of all cancellations, but four per cent of all cancellations of fixed penalty notices in the county.
Longford recorded the second lowest number of all penalty points notices quashed, with 611 notices not served, representing just one per cent of all notices.
The Gardai say they recognise the penalty points system did have systemic flaws and some members used it inappropriately.
They’ve issued a statement after GSOC criticised the force in a new report.
