Sligo/Leitrim Sinn Fein Deputy Martin Kenny will be officially ratified as the general election candidate for the new constituency when the party holds in selection convention in Carrick-on-Shannon tonight.
Tonight’s convention is being held to select the candidate for the Leitrim north Roscommon part of the constituency.
Deputy Kenny’s is the only name put forward by the time nominations closed on Wednesday evening so there will be no contest at tonight’s event.
A separate convention will be held in Sligo on Sunday to select a candidate for the Sligo and South Donegal part of the constituency.
It’s expected that Sligo Cllr Chris Mc Manus who ran last time out will also be chosen as the Sligo candidate on Sunday.
It’s understood that the party will adopt a two-candidate strategy for the constituency.
