A senior Department of Agriculture official says alternatives to Glyphosate could actually turn out be more harmful than the chemical itself.
Earlier this year Leitrim County Council agreed a ban on using the popular weedkiller in all public spaces and an online petition is encouraging Roscommon Council to follow suit.
Environmental groups claim glyphosate is a hugely harmful chemical and there is a growing global campaign to have it completely banned.
However, MEP Mairead McGuinness last week claimed that science has shown the chemical is not a carcinogen and that if it is banned it will have a huge impact on agriculture across the EU.
Dr David McGilloway, of the Pesticide Control Division of the Department of Agriculture, told Shannonside FM that if glyphosate is banned, the alternative could, in fact, be much worse for the environment :
