A Leitrim Sinn Fein TD has defended the inscription on Martin McGuinnness’ headstone.
Unveiled on Easter Sunday, it reads “In Proud and Loving Memory of Óglach Martin McGuinness, Óglaigh na hÉireann”.
However, David Kelly, son of Patrick Kelly, who was killed by the IRA alongside Garda Gary Sheehan in Leitrim in December 1983 – has hit out at the tribute and described the wording as an insult to his late father.
He maintains that Oglaigh na hEireann is a term that should only be used by the Irish Defence Forces.
Speaking on Let’s Talk, Martin Kenny TD says the reference is to one many roles that Martin McGuinness had in his life.
