More laws needed for forestry plantation

A Leitrim councillor is calling for stricter regulation in relation to land which is to be planted with forestry.

Councillor Gerry Dolan, from Drumshanbo, says there’s huge frustration and anger among people in the county who are often the last to be told that land beside their house is to be planted.

The Independent councillor says planning regulations used to be in place which meant people were given some advance knowledge of proposals, but even that has now stopped.

He says multinational companies are buying land and getting government grants to plant it as investments and do not have any regard for the people who live in the region.
