Irish Water Safety Chief urges everyone to wear life-jackets near water after Leitrim drowning tragedy

The Chief Executive of Irish Water Safety is appealing to people to always wear life-jackets when they are on boats or near the water.

John Leech was commenting following the inquest held yesterday into the deaths of a couple in Carrick-on-Shannon earlier this year.

Frank Dunne who was originally from Dublin, and his wife, were visiting relatives in the local area while home on holiday from Germany.

The inquest returned an open verdict on the deaths of the couple who had made their way back to to their boat at the marina in Carrick after having been socialising in the town at the end of March this year.

Their bodies were taken from the water in the marina after a relative had reported them missing a day later.

John Leech says the wearing of life-jackets always gives people a better chance of survival…
