There is serious concern about possible job losses in the Drumshanbo area as a result of the ongoing water shortages in south Leitrim.
Operational issues at a treatment plant in the south of the county since last Sunday has led to major disruption over the past few days.
The concern in Drumshanbo centres on the Food Hub which employs over 70 people between a number of different companies.
The Hub is host to several food related industries which rely heavily on water, including a ready meals company, a boxty company, a distillery, a brewery, bakery and cheese units.
It’s understood some companies have already sent workers home as a result of the lack of water.
The site is on a hill which means there is extra difficulty in trying to get a water supply to it.
Chairman of Drumshanbo Community Council which runs the Food Hub, Enda Mc Gloin says some innovative thinking is needed to try to resolve the issue fast.
He says the council is aware of the seriousness of the situation but is facing a very serious problem with maintaining a water supply generally.
