Carrick hotelier slams Lidl’s relocation plans

Well-known Carrick-on-Shannon businessman Joe Dolan is strongly objecting to Lidl’s plans for a new store in the town.

He is the latest high-profile resident to oppose the two-storey supermarket planned for Attyrory and Attifinlay.

Lidl wants to move from its current location at Cortober to near rival supermarkets Tesco and Aldi, on a site bounded by the N4 and the Circular Road.

This is a repeat application as last December An Bord Pleanála refused permission for the store.

However, Lidl has since been given permission to change its current store into a car sales showroom and gym, addressing the board’s concern that it could be left vacant.

However, there is strong opposition in Carrick to the new two-storey supermarket, with a protest public meeting being held in the Bush Hotel next Tuesday night.

The managing director of the hotel, Joe Dolan, is among those who objects to the store.

Leitrim County Council is due to decide whether to give the store the go-ahead by July 13th, with submissions from the public invited until June 22nd.

So far, two have been received.

Patrick White, of Inver Gael in Cortober, claims Carrick needs to keep the ‘scenic green site’ in question, which is a view Joe Dolan shares.

In his submission, Alan Martin, of Mount Temple in Carrick, claims the site is a ‘partial flood’ and says the store would have a ‘severely negative impact’ on traffic congestion in the area.
