There was an almost 47 percent drop in the number of fatal road crashes in the Shanonside region last year compared to figures for 2016.
Provisional figures from the RSA show that in Roscommon, Longford, Leitrim and Westmeath, 8 people lost their lives on the roads last year, compared to 15 people in 2016.
Leitrim’s road statistics showed no change over the last two years with one person killed in 2016 and one person losing their lives last year.
Longford saw a reduction of one in its total for 2017, with two fatal road crashes occurring in December while Roscommon’s 2016 total of seven was reduced to four last year.
Just one fatal crash occurred in Westmeath in 2017 – compared to four in 2016.
In total 158 people lost their lives in road crashes in 2017 – 15% drop in figures for 2016.
