The HSE has confirmed that a dental service is not available at the Granard, Mullingar or Delvin clinics at present due to the resignation of the previous dental surgeon.
The dentist who was acting as a General Dental Surgeon for Longford/Westmeath had indicated her resignation to the HSE some time ago, and it became effective this Tuesday the 18th.
A statement from the HSE says that until such time as a preplacement is recruited, there are inadequate resources to provide a service in Granard.
It says though that efforts have also begun to recruit an agency, temporary or permanent clinician.
Local Fine Gael councillor Micheál Carrigy says he is concerned that the Granard and Delvin areas could be left permanently without a service.
He wants the HSE to commit to finding a new dentist and to explain what they are doing to make it happen.
