Plans for a new astroturf pitch in Mohill have been given the green light.

Mohill Community and Sports Hub CLG applied to Leitrim County Council in April for planning permission.

The development at includes a new astroturf pitch along with the erection of flood lights.

Leitrim County Planners gave the project the green light with nine conditions attached.

A local primary school is awaiting a decision from the Department of Education and Youth regarding a proposed amalgamation with another school.

Scoil Mhuire, Drumboylan has educated local children for the past 76 years.

Over the weekend, it emerged that the school will close its doors.

It is the second primary school closure in county Roscommon in recent weeks following the announcement of Slatta National School.

In a statement to Shannonside FM, with rural decline, Scoil Mhuire say enrolment numbers have reduced to the point that the school is no longer sustainable.

They say that it is "extremely sad for the community and indeed a huge blow to the area."

The statement continues by saying they "hope that past pupils, staff and parents have fond memories of their time" in the school.

In concludes by saying the school is awaiting a decision from the Department with regards to an amalgamation with another school in the parish.

A local TD says she's hopeful of a positive update on the Ballaghaderreen primary care centre in the next two weeks.

Sinn Féin's Claire Kerrane believes a decision will be made on a site for the facility in the coming days.

The HSE had been offered a number of sites for the long-awaited centre.

The project has been promised for many years, but has repeatedly fallen through.

This month's meeting of the Carrick Municipal District heard calls for a development of a minor injuries unit locally.

Construction of a new community hospital located on the Leitrim Road is expected to be completed in early 2027.

The new unit, with a contract construction value in excess of €38 million, will contain 90 beds facilitating long stay, short stay and dementia wards.

It was recently confirmed by the HSE that community diagnostics are planned for the St Patrick's building in the town.

Cllr Reynolds feels that the addition a minor injuries unit, similar to that in Roscommon, would reduce the pressure on other services:

Leitrim boss Stephen Poacher was left dumbfounded after his side failed to score in the first-half against Wexford.

Leitrim drew a blank in the opening 35 minutes in their Tailteann Cup round three meeting on Saturday. Wexford led 14-points to no score at half-time before eventually winning out 20-point to 1-15.

“The mistakes we made in the first 15, 16, 17 minutes was incredible” explained Poacher.

"Absolutely incredible and you know, you can repair all you want and you can look at Brooks (Wexford keeper) kick out”.

“And you can look at the way they attack, you can look at how they defend and you can look at how we attack and how we defend”.

“But when you're just giving simple ball away it just feeds the opposition energy and it just drains you of energy”.

“That's what ultimately happened in that first-half” added Poacher.

“I think we had 11 turnovers and I think they get nine points from those 11 turnovers like so it's tough to take now you know.”

“They're a big side” explained Poacher. “They're a big side, they're a physical side; but I think to be fair, I think we made it easy for them.

“It wasn't as if we were being ripped and stripped and being tackled with serious ferocity. We were giving cheap ball away, and when you do that, lads, at this level, you get punished”.

Leitrim bow out of the Tailteann Cup after the heavy defeat. Whereas, Wexford will meet Offaly in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Fermanagh host Sligo, Laois host Down and Wicklow go to Antrim.

A Co. Longford National School is set to gain a new special class.

Colehill National School will receive the new class following an announcement by the Department of Education.

It's the fifth primary school in Longford to be sanctioned for a special class.

16 people across the Shannonside region are aged 100 or more.

That's according to figures released by the Department of Social Protection.

Ireland has an ageing population - and parts of the Shannonside region have a proven track record of holding some of the country's oldest citizens.

According to the Sunday Independent, Roscommon boasts proportionately more people living to 85 and beyond, particularly around the area of Boyle.

There were a total of 6 people aged 100 or more in Roscommon last year, the oldest of those aged 104.

Meanwhile, the oldest resident in Co. Leitrim last year was 103 - while a total of eight were over the age of 100 in the county.

Co. Longford held the least number of centenarians in the country, with two - they were both aged 102 in 2025.

Nationally, there are 296 people over the age of 100 - 11 of which are 107 years old, or older.

10 of these residents were women.

Cllr Seán McGowan is the new Cathaoirleach of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District.

He succeeds Fine Gael Cllr Maeve Reynolds who has held the position for the last year.

Cllr McGowan was elected to the role at the AGM this morning, having been nominated by Fianna Fáil Cllr Paddy Farrell and was seconded by Cllr Enda Stenson.

Independent Cllr Stenson was elected Leas Cathaoirleach.

It's been confirmed the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary will be officially open Ballaghaderreen Library on Thursday.

The library opened late last year following the completion of upgrade works at Dillon House, which had been closed since 2020.

The refurbished library now includes large seating areas for children and teenagers, as well as study and reading spaces and a community meeting room.

Gardaí have charged a man in relation to a single vehicle collision at a filling station in Roscommon Town last night. Gardaí say the incident occurred at a commercial premises on the Athlone Road at around 11.40pm.

A man, aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and was subsequently charged. He's due to appear before Roscommon District Court later this month.

Fianna Fáil councillor Seán McGowan is set to become the Cathaoirleach of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District today. The annual meeting is taking place this morning. The cathaoirleach of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District is a one-year role that includes an allowance of 6,000 euro. It's currently held by Fine Gael councillor Maeve Reynolds, whose term ends today. It's understood Fianna Fáil councillor Sean McGowan will be proposed for the position at the annual meeting this morning in Carrick and is expected to be elected.

This will followed by a standard monthly meeting of the MD. Several issues will be raised, including, according to Councillor Cormac Flynn, a decline in the upkeep and maintenance of council estates recently. Councillor Reynolds will call on the HSE to clarify the planned future use of the existing St Patrick's Hospital site in Carrick once services move to the new Community Nursing Unit next year.

Another Co. Roscommon primary school is to close its doors later this month. Drumboylan National School will close following a continued decline in enrolment numbers.

According to the Department of Education website, the school currently has 14 pupils. Drumboylan's imminent closure follows news earlier this week that Slatta National School is to close by the end of June.

The latest Irish Business Against Litter report has shown towns in the Shannonside region continue to improve in the rankings. Carrick on Shannon, which was named Ireland's Tidiest Town last year, comes in at tied 5th with Ballinasloe on the IBAL rankings.

Roscommon Town has moved up one place on the list to 10th whilst Longford Town has seen another big surge up the rankings into 14th. The report described Carrick as Cleaner than European Norms whilst Roscommon and Longford were described as Clean to European Norms.

Sligo is the cleanest town in the country followed by Monaghan and Leixlip according to the latest IBAL litter rankings. The survey by the business group shows a lot of progress in urban areas which were previously litter blackspots.

Leitrim ran out eight point winners in Ederney this afternoon.

Two goals in each half paving the way for an impressive Leitrim victory over Fermanagh.

Leitrim got off to a strong start. Kate Gormely hit the back of the Fermanagh net twice inside the opening five minutes.

Sarah Britton got a goal for the hosts after 16 minutes. However, Leitrim kept their noses in front taking a one point lead to the break, 2-4 to 1-6.

Leah Fox got Leitrim’s third goal of the contest after 31 minutes before their fourth goal arrived on 50 minutes.

Points from Muireann Devaney kept the Leitrim lead intact with a Siomha Quinn point bringing proceedings to a close, securing the victory for Leitrim.

Leitrim booked a home quarter-final place after running out eight point winners, 4-12 to 1-13.

Meanwhile, in the TG4 All-Ireland Junior Championship Offaly got the better of Longford 1-22 to 3-2.

Over 19,000 cars failed the NCT in the region in the first five months of this year.
The statistics were made available on the official NCT website.
Just over 19,000 tests were carried out in test centres in Carrick-on-Shannon, Cavan, Castlerea, Monaghan and Longford from January to the end of May.

Castlerea had the highest pass rate in the region at 47.8 per cent.
That's followed by Carrick-on-Shannon at 46.81 per cent, while Monaghan recorded 46.33 per cent.
Across the three centres, there were 2,888 dangerous failures. Carrick-on-Shannon recorded the highest amount of those, at 667.

A decision on plans for a multi-million euro development in Tarmonbarry is due next week.
The plans lodged by Tom Crosby include a restaurant, retail units and housing.

If given the green light, the project could create around 40 jobs.
A decision on the plans is due by next Thursday.

Footfall is reported to still be down in Frenchpark in recent weeks due to the opening of a section of the new N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue.
A 7km section of the major road project was opened by Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien earlier this year.

Frenchpark, Ballinagare, Tulsk and Strokestown will all be bypassed once the road is fully completed.
Fine Gael Cllr Liam Callaghan says whilst a drop in footfall is concerning, he expects it to change in the coming months:

13 derelict site compulsory purchase orders were issued locally between 2021 and 2024.
The figures have been published as part of an RTÉ Investigates report into dereliction and how it is being managed.
When a property is registered as derelict, a local authority can initiate a process to acquire it.

The council can then sell or develop the property.
Department of Housing data for 2021 to 2024 show that some councils use this tool while others do not at all.
Seven have taken place in Roscommon, four in Monaghan and two each in Longford and Cavan.
Leitrim, by contrast, did not submit any data.

Roscommon’s All-ireland minor campaign came to a sudden end as Derry ran out winners in Breffni Park.

Derry setup and All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Cork as they saw off Roscommon, 2-12 to 1-9.

Rocco Devlin’s late goal sealed the victory. Indeed, Roscommon were second best throughout, Derry leading 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time.

Jayden Concannon 38^th minute goal, brought Roscommon back into it, making it a four point game.

However, Derry were able to push on and sealed the six-point victory and a semi-final meeting with Cork.

A comprehensive 12-point win for The Mourne County brings an end to the 2026 Longford campaign.

Four goals proved the difference with Down netting twice in each half. Pat Havern opened the scoring for the contest with a point inside the opening minute of play for Down.

Matthew Flynn was quick to reply for the home side opening their own account before Shane Annett restored the lead for Down.

The Down lead was extended when Eamon Brown played the advantage and found the back of the Longford net after six minutes.

Peter Lynn and Eamonn Brown traded scores before Joseph Hagan landed the opening two-pointer of the contest after 15 minutes. Down led by two points, 1-3 to 0-4.

An eight minute scoring draught ensued following Longford’s opening two-pointer. That was brought to an end when Patrick Brooks raised the green flag again for Down after 23 minutes.

Two quick points from Shane Annett and Odhran Murdock only strengthened Downs grip on the first-half. Paddy Moran reduced the deficit by one with a point after 26 minutes.

Down hit the next two scores when Eamonn Brown and Ronan Burns both raised a white flag, moving the visitors into an eight point lead.

Longford finished the half with two points from the boot of Dylan Farrell, opening his account on 31 minutes with a free. Joseph Hagan grabbed the final score of the half.

Down leading by seven points at the break, 2-08 to 0-7.

Goals seal the deal for Down

Down got their third goal with the opening attack of the half. Ryan McGill palmed the ball to the Longford net. Oran Kenny offered the response for Longford with two points inside the space of a minute.

However, Down came storming back, firing 1-4 without reply in four minutes. Patrick Havern and Michael Rooney scored a point each before Jamie Dolan got his side’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

The four minute blitz was complete in the 46th minute when Ronan Burns landed a two-pointer.

The next two Longford scores came from two-pointers through Oran Kenny and Dessie Reynolds 50 minutes.

Odhran Murdock and Michael Rooney both scored points ensuring Down’s healthy lead stayed intact. Down led by 16 points after 53 minutes, 4:15 to 0:13.

The next score was 10 minutes in the making, Dessie Reynolds found the back of the Down net.

Jamie Doran and Aaron Farrell traded scores as Down held out for a comfortable win. Down running out 12 point winners, 4-18 to 1-15.

A gallant second-half effort followed a disastrous first half in which they failed to register a single score.

From 14 points down at the break, Leitrim were eliminated from The Tailteann Cup with a five point defeat in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Glen Malone gave Wexford the lead after 30 seconds. Niall Hughes, Mark Rossiter and Ben Brosnan all chipped in with points as Wexford went five ahead after 10 minutes.

Eoghan Nolan raised the orange flag for the first two-pointer of the day. The visitors who were dominating Leitrim all over the park.

Ryan O’Rourke thought he had opened the scoring for Leitrim but his effort is signalled wide. Robbie Brooks, Pairic Hughes and Ben Brosnan kicked Wexford into a 10 point lead after 26 minutes.

A Niall Hughes effort and a two-pointer from Darragh Brooks brought proceedings to a close. Leitrim went to the break scoreless.

At half-time Wexford held a commanding lead, 0-14 to 0-00.

Leitrim came flying out the blocks in the second-half with Riordan O’Rourke registering his side’s first score of the half after 30 seconds of the half.

Mark Diffley got Leitrim’s second of the afternoon before Oisin McLoughlin landed a pair of two-pointers. Leitrim trailing by nine after 46 minutes, 0-15 to 0-04.
